DOJ’s Pam Bondi: No Tolerance for States Ignoring Trump’s Transgender Order

U.S. Attorney General Pam Bondi who was sworn in to lead the Department of Justice earlier this month has issued a stern warning to states like Maine, California, and Minnesota, demanding compliance with President Trump’s executive order barring transgender athletes from participating in girls’ and women’s sports. In letters sent Tuesday, Bondi emphasized that the Department of Justice (DOJ) will take swift legal action against states that violate federal law. Bondi addressed Maine Governor Janet Mills, California’s CIF Executive Director Ron Nocetti, and Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison, stating, ‘This Department of Justice will hold accountable states and state entities that violate federal law.’ However, officials in these states argue that their anti-discrimination laws protect transgender individuals and prevent compliance with Trump’s order. Minnesota Attorney General Keith Ellison responded, claiming that Trump’s executive order lacks ‘the force and effect of law’ and cannot supersede state laws. Despite this pushback, Bondi made it clear that the DOJ “does not tolerate state officials who ignore federal law. We will leverage every legal option necessary to ensure state compliance with federal law and President Trump’s executive order protecting women’s sports,”. In her letters, Bondi warned that “if states are found in violation of Title IX, the DOJ will take ‘all appropriate action to enforce federal law.'” She added, “I hope that it does not come to this, The Department of Justice does not want to have to sue states or state entities, or to seek termination of their federal funds. We only want states and state entities to comply with the law. And federal law requires giving girls an equal opportunity to participate in sports and athletic events by ensuring that girls need to compete only with other girls, not with boys. As Pam Bondi and the DOJ enforce Trump’s executive order, the debate over transgender athletes in women’s sports continues to escalate. Will states comply, or will this lead to a legal showdown?
