In a fiery response to French politician Raphael Glucksmann, White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt made it clear that the Statue of Liberty is staying right where it is—in America. During a Monday press briefing, Leavitt chastised Glucksmann, a member of the European Parliament, for demanding the return of the iconic statue. “Absolutely not,” Leavitt said with a smile when asked if America would return the Statue of Liberty to France. “And my advice to that unnamed, low-level French politician would be to remember that it’s only because of the United States of America that the French are not speaking German right now. They should be very grateful to our great country,” she added, drawing applause from the press corps.
Glucksmann, co-president of a small left-wing party in France, had earlier demanded the return of the Statue of Liberty during a speech to his supporters. “It was our gift to you. But apparently, you despise her. So, she will be happy here with us,” he said, referencing the statue’s origins as a gift from France to America.
The Statue of Liberty, a symbol of freedom and hope, has stood in New York Harbor since the 1800s. Glucksmann’s remarks sparked a wave of reactions, with Leavitt’s response dominating headlines.
