In a bold move on her first day as US Attorney General, Pam Bondi has taken a hardline stance against sanctuary cities, ordering a freeze on all federal funding to jurisdictions that protect undocumented immigrants. This directive, backed by President Donald Trump, has sparked a fierce debate over immigration, states’ rights, and the role of the federal government. Hours after being sworn in, Pam Bondi directed the Justice Department to pause federal funding for sanctuary cities. She also tasked the DOJ with investigating organizations that support undocumented immigrants and prosecuting jurisdictions that obstruct law enforcement. According to the Center for Immigration Studies, sanctuary cities received over $1.56 billion in federal funding in 2023, making this a significant blow to their budgets. The move has drawn sharp criticism all over the country. According to an article published on 23rd January 2025, by ‘U.S Committee for Refugees and Immigrants’ a non profit Organization, “Cutting federal funding to sanctuary cities also violates the underlying principle of the Tenth Amendment, which protects states and localities from federal overreach. Such actions could disrupt critical programs funded by federal dollars, including public safety initiatives, disaster relief, housing support, and healthcare services. These cuts are not just an attack on immigrants—they are an assault on the well-being of every resident in these cities”. This isn’t the first time sanctuary cities have been in the crosshairs. On his first day in office, Donald Trump signed an executive order directing the Attorney General and Homeland Security “to the maximum extent possible under law, evaluate and undertake any lawful actions to ensure that so-called ‘sanctuary’ jurisdictions, which seek to interfere with the lawful exercise of Federal law enforcement operations, do not receive access to Federal funds. But sanctuary cities aren’t backing down. Mayors like Chicago’s Brandon Johnson have vowed to resist Trump’s policies, even if it means losing federal funding. Oversight Committee Chair, James Comer said Wednesday that “The mayors of Boston, Chicago, Denver, and New York City plan to testify at the Committee’s, March 5 hearing”. Meanwhile, In an another statement to Fox News, Bondi also said “I will be setting up a “Weaponization Working Group,” tasked with reviewing the activities of all law enforcement agencies over the past four years to identify cases of “politicized justice,” including Donald Trump-related lawsuits, such as those led by former Special Counsel Jack Smith and Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg. As on date, Across the country, Immigration and Customs Enforcement has made more than 8,000 arrests of migrants. On February 1 alone, the agency made 864 arrests. The battle over sanctuary cities and federal funding is heating up. Will Pam Bondi’s directives hold up in court? How will cities respond to the loss of critical funds?
