President-elect Donald Trump is considering nominating Republican presidential rival Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis as Defense secretary, according to two main news channels” BBC and CBS” familiar with the situation.
The Wall Street Journal was first to report this story.
DeSantis would replace Pete Hegseth, whose prospects for confirmation appear to be dimming amid allegations of sexual assault and alcohol abuse. Since Trump nominated Hegseth, a former Fox News host, to lead the US Department of Defence, a sexual assault allegation has surfaced, as well as questions about his qualifications.
Bringing DeSantis into the Trump administration fold could help the governor’s political prospects given that he is term-limited and scheduled to leave office in early 2027 when it was anticipated he could run for president again. It would lead to the ascension of Lt. Gov. Jeanette Nuñez, who would be the first female governor of Florida and the first of Cuban descent.

The news comes as Hegseth, whose nomination was announced in mid-November, meets with members of Congress this week to discuss the job, which requires Senate approval, and drum up support.
Hegseth is making the rounds on Capitol Hill this week, meeting with Senate Republicans in a bid to shore up his nomination. He cannot afford to lose more than three Republicans in a confirmation vote, assuming all Democrats oppose him.
According to CBS, there is increasing skepticism about Hegseth’s chances of getting enough votes to be confirmed by the Senate.
At least four Republican senators would be likely to vote against him if they voted today, two sources told CBS News.
John Bolton, who served as Trump’s national security adviser, told the BBC that the post of defence secretary should never be a “loyalty appointment”.
“The question is: Will he be a yes man to Donald Trump or will he behave professionally and with courage the way he did when he was in uniform?” added Bolton.
